pundits that president obama lost that debate. and he clearly did. you look at the polls from all these different organizations they say he lost from 32 to 42 points. but i don't want to equate two things and get them confused. a tactical victory and a debate for mitt romney does not mean you should vote for him. it doesn't mean that he's right. nice job on the debate the tactics, and president obama i can't believe you screwed that up. look at all those lies, why didn't you attack him. it doesn't mean that he's telling the truth and it doesn't mean that president obama is not accurate in what he says is his policies and numbers. i look at these numbers, i think, oh my god there are people who accidently believe that that good debate was reality. the reason why president obama had a bad debate is because he could not clearly show that mitt romney does not live in a reality-based world. now i'm getting pissed. look, i don't mean you should vote for romney. to me that is so obvious right? but apparently it's not obvious to people at home. that's why president obama has to do a much

the fact that was this was the first debate and strong performance by romney and weak by obama, probably means romney will at the end of the series have a gain. the gain is the impact is generally two to three points which may not sound like much, but when you're in a close as a race as this one is, and it is close. the track is five points as you said. take a look. there's 91 polls in the last 30 days, 91 national polls, not state polls, national polls, and the margin's been over two points. if mitt romney moves up two points and president obama moves down two points, there's another contest here with somebody else in front. lou: look at the swing states, looking at rasmussen, romney ahead in virginia and in ohio, romney a point behind the president where there was a significant lead, as you know, for the president. this is having some influence early. is it likely to be more profound as days go on? >> well, in all likelihood, this will build itself in for three or four more days here. there could be a lengthened -- and then the vice presidential debate that i suspect ryan takes care of

since the debate, and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other poll. that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, editorial director of the "huffington post," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gentlemen, thank you for joining us. always go to the elected official first. mr. mayor, what needs to be d
